I have signed up with a variety of online marketers so I can study and emulate their strategies. It leaves my email in-basket however, quite full.

To make matters even worse, I don't spend a lot of time cleaning out my inbasket. I read and respond to the notices I need to, then just ignore the rest. This results in a complete overload...and crash... of my email client last Saturday.

Fortunately, I subscribe to a fabulous service, www.MyComputerWorks.com. The technicians there can access your computer remotely (with your permission and oversight of course) and fix any number of issues. This past weekend, a team of them repaired, recovered, re-established all of my email accounts. I didn't get everything back (that would have crashed it again anyway), but the BEST news is that, I didn't have to spend hours (or more likely days) working on my own, trying to figure out what to do.

They did all of the work for me!

It took literally hours (probably about 10 when it was all said and done). But it wasn't 10 MY hours. It was 10 of THEIRS! Talk about leverage and good use of outsourcing.

I love those guys! The techniques are amazing and I'm right now somewhat overloaded with possibilities for expansion. I can see that I need to outsource some of the activities that consume my time so I can focus on more high leverage opportunities - like building relationships with a referral network.

I also know that I must begin interacting more directly with people live and face-to-face. I switched the telephone/cable/internet bill from my husband's name to mine and had to reconfigure all 3 of my email accounts. I spent nearly an hour with a tech support person trying to figure out why one of them was still not receiving messages sent from the other two.

I spent over an hour on the phone with techsupport at my shopping cart provider and then with my webmaster assessing what might have happened with the notices I was supposed to receive notifying me of people who had signed up for a teleclass I scheduled. I had only gotten one notice and postponed the class only to find out a few minutes after start time that 21 people had signed up and many of them were on the call waiting for me! Yikes! Lesson learned. Don't rely on autoresponder notices...check the cart for sign-ups before cancelling a class.

It was a tough day. At the end of the day, I looked back on where my time had gone. I was convinced that it has become time to hire someone else, yet given the nature of the things that consumed the time, it seemed like what was needed was my own tech support staff. Here's the bad news. I want to understand the tech portions of my business and I'm afraid of letting some part of the technology side go. Now, this sounds like what my coaching clients tell me when they are facing the big delegation decision. So I'm going to reassess where I spend my time and come up with a plan for how to get some of these time-consuming annoyances off of my plate.

I realize that I can't scale to the size I want to become if I keep all these 'goodies' to myself. Time for a reinvention. Stay tuned!

Strategic Planning

Last year about this time, I created a strategic planning tool to make available for my clients. I gavee a talk on the topic, and one of the attendees asked me if I did all of the things I was suggesting they do. He wanted to know if I 'walked the talk'. Fortunately, I did and I gave him several examples of how I incorporate planning into my life.

A couple of weeks ago, I was beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed with all that was on my plate and a little depressed about all the things that weren't on my plate. In a flash of wisdom, decided now would be a good time for my own annual strategic planning session. So I selected one of the days I had set aside for business development, cleared the few activities that were on the calendar and dedicated the day for a strategic planning session with myself.

Wow! It was wonderful! So wonderful, in fact that I have now promised myself to devote more time to this activity on an annual basis. As I was winding down, I realized that I could have used another day to review and prioritize items from all of the conferences and workshops I've attended over the last year. Next year, I will devote two days to the activity.

I revamped my mission statement, refined my target market, developed strategies and goals that left me feeling refreshed, recharged and focused! My mood had shifted dramatically. The world seemed like a playground rather than a prison. It was truly amazing.

Pick up your own copy (http://www.emeraldharvest.com/StrategicBusinessPlanning/strategicbusinessplanning.html) and go forth and plan!

Manking space

Last Saturday, I had arranged to spend the day cleaning my office and office closet with the assistance of my virtual assistant. Due to a scheduling mistake on my part, my assistant was not available. However, I decided to go forth with the plan and emptied my closet, went through most of my file drawers and threw away pounds of no-longer-needed papers.

Typically, I do this around New Year's each year, but this purge was different. Having really settled into what my purpose is and what my business is about, I was able to let go of many categories of things I had been holding on to "just in case" I needed them. Additionally, I believe that my increased use of the Internet has created a sense of confidence that if I do need something again, I'll be able to find it (or something even more current on the subject) on the WorldWideWeb.

I love that feeling of freedom that clear space provides!

Management Mastery Club

A preview of the site was launched last Friday. We keep polishing and perfecting the product until it's perfect. For some tasks, surgery for example, perfection is a requirement.

For most things in our lives however, completion is a more desired result. Think about it. In the grand scheme of things, how important is it that you have the 'perfect' article written before you submit it for publishing? Certainly, it should be readable and free of grammar and syntax errors. Beyond that though, does every idea you've considered have to be included? Does every transition have to be imminently smooth? Do you really need to have thought of and addressed every counter point? Probably not.

If the point of publishing is increasing your visibility, getting it done and 'out there' is more important than making it perfect. The sooner you release your article, the sooner you can move on to your next project - the next thing that could have a positive impact on your business.

Think about the amount of time you've spent (or even wasted at the extreme), polishing to a high gleam some project that a 'rough cut' would have sufficed. Imagine how much more you could get done if you stopped when things were 'good enough'.

Month end

Well, I've arrived near the end of the month and it's time to create the September newsletter if there is going to be one, which of course, there is. Yesterday, I decided to focus on women business owners of finacial services firms (insurance and mortgage brokerages). I can relate to this group because I am a female business owner myself and have coached a number of insurance brokers. I also love the mortgage broker industry and have toyed with the idea of working in that field as well.

I'm excited about providing HR and business management services to this esteemed group to support them in growing their enterprises.

By the way, the software tools are now installed on Management Mastery Club and we can proceed with the content development.

Progress

Well, I have purchased and installed two software tools on www.ManagementMasteryClub.com that will manage the username and password administration and will allow people to schedule coaching sessions with me. However there is a wealth of information behind the scene so I just have to figure out how to make it more visible. Also, the major value of the Management Mastery Coaching Club is not just the information, but the ability to get targeted coaching on specific issues. That is more than well worth the minimal monthly fee.

Technology - Part II

Well, it's beginning to come together. I purchased two software solutions for www.ManagementMasteryClub.com and after some consideration, opted to have the providers do the installation rather than my webmaster. My thinking was that the providers, being infinitely more familiar with their product would have a minimal learning curve. And that my webmasters, skilled though they were, would take a bit longer to figure out how to deal with any nuances of the particular applications.

Additionally, one of the providers offered FREE installation and the other was only $20 more. Almost made the decision a no-brainer one.

In any event, progress is happening. My webmasters are working on the website template and uploading the content as we speak. We had discovered a website that offered hundreds of free design templates and I had found which I loved. Unfortunatly, it already had text in it which could not be modified.

The author offered an editable version for a very reasonable price, so I went to purchase it and, lo-and-behold, PayPal would not accept a payment for him. Hmmm. Something sounds really amiss here.

Well, I've written to him (because I really do like the way the template looks) to find out how to pay him. Hopefully, he'll write back quickly with instructions. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines plan as “…a drawing or diagram showing the parts of details of something, a method for accomplishing an objective.”

That sounds really dry to me. I see planning as a much more exciting venture. (See the article on Strategic Planning from the October newsletter.) Merriam Webster also lists goal, aim and intend as related words. When done well, planning can transform one’s confidence level in achieving the end goal by making it seem more ‘doable’ and realistic. It supports the realization of the goal by anticipating potential obstacles and identifying necessary resources. By including others in the planning process, one can capture critical alignment from people who are important in the fulfillment of the goal.

It’s not enough to know and say to the troops, ‘let’s take that hill!’. As a leader, you have to be able to outline how you’re going to do that. Which route you’ll take. What dangers might exist and how you’ll deal with them if they arise.

People avoid planning for a number of reasons. They very often think there just isn’t time. There are fires to be put out. Urgent demands to be satisfied. This brings to mind Stephen Covey’s Time Management Matrix outlined in his 3rd Habit – Put First Things First in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Restoring the Character Ethic. In that model, he distinguishes what’s urgent (requires immediate attention) and not and what’s important (contributes to your mission, vision or high priority goals) and not.

Many people spend the bulk of their time in the urgent and important category, and this is helpful, but this leads to burnout, stress and constant fire-fighting, all justified by a sense of accomplishment expressed as “I get a lot done in a day”.

Planning falls into the important and not urgent quadrant. I would hazard a guess that rarely (with perhaps the exception of budget time) is anyone breathing down your neck asking “Where’s that plan?!”

This however is where the real payoff in life and in business occurs. By also focusing on the longer-term mission and vision, you’ll make sure you’re working on the right things, not just the urgent things.

One of my clients recently lamented that there just wasn’t time for planning until she realized that she could choose to make planning one of her ‘to-dos’ for the day and schedule time on her calendar for it! That seemed like a great idea, but alas, two weeks later, she admitted that she had not invested the time she had allocated to it because she still gave into the urgent needs of the day. It wasn’t until we spoke about her vision and the consequences of not fulfilling it did the emotional commitment to plan take hold.

The actual act of planning can start from the present or the future. From the present, the following steps are involved:
1. Analyze your current position
2. Identify the end goal
3. Explore options
4. Choose the appropriate actions, steps and milestones to reach the goal
5. Evaluate the plan: assess potential flaws, obstacles, missed opportunities
6. Implement the plan
7. Acknowledge the end of implementation (success/abandonment)
8. Assess and share lessons learned

Deepak Chopra suggests another view in The Way of the Wizard, “living backward in time…letting the future create the present.” He suggests that the more traditional view of planning keeps us weighed down by our memory of past successes and ‘failures’.

To try this approach for planning from the future:
1. Envision the end goal
2. Ask yourself, ‘What helpful thing happened or came about just before the goal was realized?”
3. Then ask, “What needed to happen in order for that to occur?”
4. Keep asking yourself those questions until you arrive back at the present moment.

By beginning with the end in mind (another point from Covey), one is less bound by sequential logic and preconceived notions of what’s possible. Chopra goes into a quantum physics discussion of time which I won’t repeat here, but suggests that ‘this' (present) moment is pivotal for any possible future you can envision. Recognize that the choices you make today (or any day) will make the occurrence of your desired future more likely. So, make a habit of keeping the end in mind and choosing wisely, day by day and moment by moment.

Leadership that Transforms & Delivers - Motivation Style

James McGregor Burns wrote about leadership, motivation and influence styles in the 1970s distinguishing transactional from transformational leaders. (Are you a transformational leader? Take this assessment and find out). Transactional leaders improve organizational efficiency, transformational leaders steer organizations onto a better course of action.

Much management theory at the time subscribed to the transactional approach of offering contingent rewards for specific behaviors or results, managing by exception (using corrective measures to keep work on track or to punish unacceptable performance) or using a laissez-faire, hands off approach, letting the chips fall where they may.

Transformational or charismatic leadership, on the other hand, seeks to increase employees' efforts by contributing to their sense of self-esteem and self-efficacy. Transformational leaders seek to tie peoples' personal values to larger (e.g. organizational or communal) initiatives thereby increasing the intrinsic value of achieving those initiatives.

They raise the level of awareness and consciousness about the importance, significance and value of particular outcomes. I can't help but think of Jack Nicholson's line to Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets, "You make me wanna be a better man." That's the impact of a transformational leader.

These leaders direct others toward a new set of values and behaviors, a better course of action. They find (or create) a unifying purpose and commonly held goals that inspire people to transcend self-interests in pursuit of something grand and noble.

Transformational leaders engage the hearts and minds of employees by using participatory decision making to involve employees in the process of shaping the organization's vision and reaching agreement about strategies and tactics.

Their words, symbols and stories build contagious enthusiasm that energizes people. While their approach is often bold, they are able to find significance and vision-relevance in even the most mundane of activities. Transformational leaders demonstrate a 'can do' attitude and 'walk the talk'. They expect, get and reward innovative thinking and action from others and model that behavior themselves.

They rely less on hierarchy and more on interdependent work relationships. Transformational leaders express genuine interest in their staff. They invest time and energy in mentoring and guiding staff members toward the highest unfoldment of each individual's skills and abilities. Developing the people around them is important to them. They pride themselves their ability to on nurture the growth of others.

Transformational leaders subordinate their own personal goals for the benefit of their staff, organization and/or the lofty goal being pursued. Loyalty on both sides of the equation is high. Followers share their leader's values and vision, they admire the leader and see him or her as a role model. As a result, they continually strive to match the leaders high expectations of them to gain and keep their leader's respect. In doing so, they outperform even their own expectations, literally moving mountains in the process.

Leadership that Transforms & Delivers - Trust & Integrity

Transformational leaders tend to be more relationship focused than other leaders. They create a strong sense of trust among the people with whom they work. They not only talk about their vision, they enact it. They “walk the talk” by doing things that symbolize and model their vision. They are reliable and consistent in their actions. They stay on course, true to their purpose and ideals, reinforcing the idea that they can be trusted.

What is trust? Trust, according to Dr. Susan D Boon and Holmes, is “a positive expectation that another will not – through words, actions, or decisions – act opportunistically”. When you trust someone, you expect that they will not take advantage of you. This reinforces the idea that transformational leaders act and inspire others to act for the ‘greater good’ rather than merely in pursuit of their own individual gains and rewards.
Diego Gambetta says trust is an “internal judgment which may be inferred from external action”. So how do leaders evoke trust?

James Kouzes and Barry Posner offer five key dimensions that underlie the concept and experience of trust: integrity, competence, consistency, loyalty and openness.

Recently, I was on a conference call with the leadership team of the Black Professional Coaches Alliance. We spoke about integrity and what it meant to us. In its simplest form, I said that integrity is telling the truth, doing what you say you’ll do, being reliable. On a grander scale, it’s living consistent with your own internal value system, your core principles and ideals. Transformational leaders have clearly articulated and strongly felt values that guide their actions – that keep them in integrity with themselves, allowing them to be fully transparent to the people around them.

Leaders must demonstrate a level of technical and interpersonal competence, knowledge and skill. They don’t need to know everything, but they must possess enough wisdom that people respect and are willing to follow them. People must have confidence that the leader will be able to do what he or she promises and will deliver on commitments made.

Consistency relates to a leader’s reliability, predictability and good judgment. If there are regular discrepancies between a leader’s words and actions, credibility will be lost. The phrase “Do as I say, not as I do” is the antithesis of transformational leadership.

Loyalty is the willingness to protect and save face for another person. It speaks to the concern transformational leaders show for the people they lead. It reflects an elevation of the needs of others as they pursue the organizations goals. When someone has demonstrated great loyalty, it inspires others to reciprocate and take actions or risks they might otherwise have avoided.

Openness is the propensity for full disclosure, being vulnerable, with no hidden agendas. When it appears that all cards to be on the table, people feel secure and comfortable that they can reasonably predict future events. They aren’t working in a vacuum, or feeling uncertain about the environment in which they are operating.

How do you build trust? Fernando Bartolome and I offer some suggestions.
Practice openness – inform people about decisions you make and the criteria you use to make them. Disclose relevant information.

Share your feelings – let people see that you’re ‘human’. You don’t have to act out your feelings, but saying “I’m really angry or frustrated” will let people stay connected with you while you work through your issues.

Tell the truth – nothing damages trust more than being lied to.
Deliver on your promises – do what it takes to make your commitments happen when you say they will. As soon as you realize they might not happen, make a new agreement rather than hoping no one will notice.

Be fair and consistent in your treatment of others – favoritism alienates and puts people working at cross-purposes. Inconsistent behavior causes confusion and wasted energy as people try to figure out how you’ll respond this time.

Trust others yourself – Believe in people. Expect them to ‘do the right thing’. See people as capable, willing and committed. Remember the Pygmalion principle. The title has been morphed slightly to Leadership that Transforms…and Delivers. Transformation is a wonderful thing, but results in the real world are the evidence that transformation has truly occurred. And insightful planning and flawless execution are the source of results.
I have scheduled and held several interviews with key leaders and am still looking for other leaders to include. I am especially interested in people outside of the Phoenix area that I could interview by phone. If you know leaders who have touched or inspired you deeply, please email me info@emharv.com and recommend them.

This installment is on Vision. “Vision is that dream you have for yourself and the world. It creates a gap between the way things are and the way they could be…A shared vision, especially one that is intrinsic, uplifts people's aspiration. Work becomes part of pursuing a larger purpose embodied in the organization's products or services…or embodied in the style climate and spirit of the organization “Shared visions compel courage so naturally that people don't even realize the extent of their own courage. They foster risk-taking and experimentation.” Peter Senge, The Fifth Discipline

I recently lead a workshop on Leadership that Transforms & Delivers. We pondered many questions in that workshop.

What's the legacy you want to leave?

What characteristics or qualities do you want to bring forth in your community or organization?

How can you make this world a better place?

What kind of person do you have to become to create that brand new world?

“Corporate Mystics have a gift for engaging people in big dreams. They can stand in a future that does not exist and map out the details of how to get there.”

Strategic planning

Hard to believe another year is almost gone. Time to take stock of this year's accomplishments and start setting goals for next year.

Many business leaders and business owners balk at the idea of assessing and planning believing that there just isn't time for all that 'soft' stuff. In reality though, it's the businesses that make time for sound business planning that experience significant expansion and growth. Not taking time to plan can be very costly.

Assessments can be short and sweet or detailed and comprehensive. Short assessments include questions like:

What were our goals for this year?

How did we do?

What did we learn?

What could we do differently next year?

Even asking these simple questions will bring to light needed enhancements and refinements.

Looking forward, questions to ponder include:

What business are we really in?

Where does our revenue come from? Where should it come from?

What is the best, most profitable business model for us?

Are our mission and vision still the 'right' ones?

Where is our industry going?

What do we need to do to keep up or take the lead?

What competitive challenges are we facing or are we likely to face next year?

How can we improve our operations?

How can we capitalize on what we learned and accomplished this year?

Are there new areas should we venture into? What are they? How do we best get started?

What skills will be needed to catapult us forward? Do we need to hire, train, buy or outsource them?

What new ideas have come to your mind as you read this list? Imagine the depth and quality of ideas that could arise if you had this conversation with your key staff members? They will bring different perspectives to such an inquiry and potentially open brand new vistas for your company's future.

Transformational leadership component: values

Transformational leaders are change agents. They engage the hearts, minds and souls of people and transform them through visionary and inspirational messages. They steer the organization toward pursing the ‘right’ goals and encourage people to pursue those goals in lieu of their self-interests.

I've begun interviewing leaders to discern how they really accomplish change in their organizations. I'll be compiling their observations for a bookreport some of their thoughts as I go along.

One such interview was with an executive with a local utility. I was struck by her apparent humility and willingness to ask for (not demand) help. She readily admitted vunerability offering"I don't have all the answers" to her staff and colleagues. She believed that willingness was, in part, the key to her success.

She was also quite clear that a critical factor in effective leadership was being principal-driven in your approach. Identifying and communicating your values and what's really important serves as a lighthouse on the shore of a stormy sea. It acts as a rudder and truing mechanism in the decision-making process.

If you're intrigued about how you rate, visit the website and take the assessment, www.emeraldharvest.com/assessment.html.

Leadership that Transforms

Well, MIA again. Where does the time go?

This time, I've been at work on creating coaching programs and products. My most recent foray is into the area of transformational leadership.

On my home page is a link (http://www.emeraldharvest.com/assessment.html) to an assessment called "Are you a transformational leader?" The assessment 'tests' your utilization of various components of transformational leadership such as having and sharing a compelling vision, holding true to and communicating your values, motivating others, living and working with integrity and evoking trust in others. It's a fun assessment and will provide you with insights into your particular leadership practices.

I've also developed a coaching program designed to focus on these aspects as well as planning and execution - two other competencies important to leaders. This program is for emerging and contemporary leaders who want to transform their own approach to influencing those around them.

Stay tuned. There will be more developments on the leadership front. You can read more about it in back issues of the Performance Improvement Partner newsletters, http://emeraldharvest.com/newsletter_archives.html

Wow! Where Have I Been?!?

Obviously not here in my blog!

However, I went back to review the goals I'd set back in February and was pleasantly surprised just how many of them had been reached. (No wonder I've been tired!) It reinforced for me the value of periodically taking stock of where you are, where you're headed and what exactly you've accpmplished. Clearly, I need to do this more often.

I know many of us rush from activity to activity without taking stock, or worse, not really being clear about where we want to go. Without having clear, written goals, we're live leaves blowing in the wind or driftwood casting about on the ocean. If we are at all engaged in life, it will always fill our days with a myriad of activities. It's up to us to chart the course to create priorities for which activities would be the most meaningful for us!

Among the list of completed goals:

created and published several issues of Your Performance Improvement Partner™ newsletter

revamped my website with new content and e-commerce capability

developed products for sale

created alliances with several organizations greatly expanding my potential customer reach

published articles

secured great PR in my local market

All because I created a plan. I knew what I wanted. There are still a number of items on the list. Because of all the learning I've been engaged in, there are a ton more items that have to be harvested from all my hand-written notes and entered on my goal spreadsheet this week.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emeraldharvest.blogspot.com/2005/07/wow-where-have-i-been.html' title='Wow! I love coaching people and working with teams, but there are only so many hours in the day for be to be "face-to-face" with them, even if it's just on the phone.

The process I'm going through is remniscient of the transformation undertaken by a technology company I worked in as V.P. of H.R. That company offered a sophisticated business intelligence software that could be customized to provide a variety of solutions for an array of business problems. The executives there decided they could take the solutions they had developed for clients in specific industries and create industry-specific products that could be sold 'off the shelf' with a minimum of customization.

I've started looking for ways to convert the work I've been doing with clients over the years into tools, books and audio programs that a broader spectrum of people could benefit from. The products I'm developing will focus on conflict resolution, teambuilding, career development and fulfillment and performance improvement...for starters. Stay tuned for these new product offerings.

Over the last several weeks, I've also been learning about how to use technology (specifically email and the Internet) to connect with more people. I'll share those with you as I bring them online.

Love & Marriage

As I approach the first anniversary of my third marriage, recall a poem I wrote during the troubled times of my second marriage. When things aren't going well, it's easy to blame the other person for your problems. In reality though, we are rarely victims of our circumstances. There are actions we can take, ways be can become, attributes toward which we can move. As I re-read this poem, I saw that many of the ideas could be translated to the worlds of business and leadership as well.

Marriage has caused me to be ...
Patient when I was in a hurry
Accepting when I wanted to judge
Forgiving when I wanted to be righteous... and it's so delicious to be right
Taken care of when I wanted to be self-sufficient
Self sufficient when I wanted to be taken care of
Strong when it was easier to be weak
Courageous when I wanted to be a wimp
Soft when I wanted to fight
Intimate when I wanted to be independent
Independent when I wanted to be submissive
A model when I wanted to give up on my ideals
Flexible when I wanted to be rigid
Loving when it was easier to blame
A leader when it felt safer to follow
A follower when I wanted to take charge
Patient when I wanted to be demanding
Demanding when it was easier to be passive
Neat when I wanted to be a slob
Decisive when I didn't have the nerve
Responsible when it was easier to be a victim
Outspoken when I would have been quiet
Quiet when I wanted to scream out
Close when I was inclined to be distant
Respectfully distant when I would have preferred to press in
Marriage has caused me to grow when I wanted to stay small
(c) 2002 Loretta Booker

Resolving conflicts

5 Keys to Resolving Conflict
What can you do when you find yourself embroiled in a conflict with someone?

1. Distinguish facts from feelings.
Remember "Dragnet and Sgt. Friday? His famous line was "Just the facts, Ma'am.” We all think our view of the world is the "right" one: the only right one. Recognize that you just have a piece of the 'truth'. Try creating a police or news report that captures both your view of what happened as well as the view of the person with whom you're having the conflict. This will help you release your attachment to the 'right-ness' of your personal perspective.

When we disagree with someone, we often get worked up over not just the event that happened, but the judgments we made about the situation and the person and the feelings that were evoked in us. Take ownership for your own feelings. The other person didn't "make you feel" a particular way. They did what they did. You chose to feel the way you did. There was a whole range of emotions you could have felt. You picked the one you did feel and notice if it's a familiar one for you.

2. Distinguish motive and emotions
We often assume we know what the other person was intending to do 'to us'. The only thing we really know is the reaction we had to the other person's actions. Recognize that they may not have 'meant' to disrespect (or hurt, or ignore or control) you. Also recognize that if you are the perpetrator, just because your motive was innocent, that doesn't negate the feelings the other person experienced.

3. Convert complaints to requests
Imagine that any complaint (yours or another's) is really a request in disguise. When we are in situations we don't like and we feel powerless, the natural response is to complain and blame.
Next time you catch yourself complaining, stop and ask yourself "If something could be different
here and I would like that better, what would 'that' be?" Then ask for it! Make the request to someone who has the power to grant it. Complaining or making requests to anyone else won't get your problem solved.

4. Take responsibility for your contribution, role or influence
Recognize that you may have something to do with the continued existence of the problem.
This is generally hard for people to deal with. It's so much easier to blame someone else for your problems. It's the "those idiots over there" syndrome. "If they would just." They may not.
See what actions you can take to solve your own dilemma.

5) Forgive and give yourself a gift
Forgiveness is not condoning or even accepting. Forgiving someone in your heart who has 'wronged' you, just releases your agony. It does nothing for them. Holding on to your grievance
will just keep your blood pressure high. If you can't muster "I forgive them", try "I'm willing to forgive them.” Then let it go and let your willingness salve your pain.

For questions, write me at loretta@emharv.com or just post them here as a comment.

Caring for Your Soul (and Relationship) in Matters of Money®

This is a plug.

It's almost Valentine's Day. That day of the year when couples express their love for each other. Yet, even at this time of the year, I find that many people and couples are still suffering or fighting about money in some way. In fact, conflict over money is often cited as the #1 cause for divorce.

Individuals either spend more than they (or their partners) think they should. They are compelled to save money and have a hard time splurging on themselves or their families. They worry about money no matter how much they have. Or they avoid the subject of money altogether. Personally, I'm a spender. I love buying things! My husband is a saver. Can you imagine the conversations we have?

And beyond the impact money has on relationships, many people also believe that they can't really earn a living doing what they love to do. So they work at jobs and careers that aren't fulfilling and aren't feeding their soul just so they can pay their bills every month.

There are four very simple things people can do to have a more rich and satisfying life. These issues get directly addressed in the workshop, Caring for your Soul in Matters of Money®. The four things are:

Identify the limiting beliefs about money they inherited as a child that are constraining them in various ways in their adult lives and in their relationships

Create a new belief system that dramatically expands what they consider possible for themselves and their families in the arena of money.

Take time to examine what is really important to them; identify their gifts and the contribution they were meant to make.

Design and implement an action plan to integrate their gifts and their new belief so that they start living the life they love today.

If you're interested in exploring this concept further, visit www.caringforyoursoulinmattersofmoney.com There are two courses in Arizona in the month of Feburary and more will be scheduled throughout the year in the Phoenix area and around the country. There's also an interesting article the Arizona Business Gazette published that you can read at http://www.azcentral.com/abgnews/articles/1230money30.html.
